Situation Overview
Client sought to reduce its organizational health care costs with initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles among its 3,500 employees. While the company had been promoting wellness for nearly 10 years, participation in the program was limited to a relatively small group of employees. Though often cited in the Human Resource community as a revolutionary approach, the program was having only limited effect on the firm’s health care costs.

Solutions
In order to help dramatically increase wellness program participation, EIM worked with the firm’s promotional agency to more effectively market the program and encourage participation through a rewards system. The system included an online promotional site featuring individual accounts for employees who voluntarily participated. Online administrative resources helped the client enroll employees and meet individual health maintenance objectives.

Results
Within the first 18 months of program launch, 61% of employees were actively participating – a 67% increase.
After three years of program operation, employee participation stands at over 80%.
The program generated approximately $1 million in annual health care cost savings.
