Promoting Alternate Transportation

Industry
Finance and insurance

Program Type
Behavior modification

Objectives
Reduce demand for employee parking spaces
Eliminate annual state non-compliance fines
Encourage a green lifestyle

Situation Overview
Client sought to establish an incentive program for employees to reduce demand for employee parking spaces and to eliminate an annual $250,000 state non-compliance fine. An added benefit to this program was the promotion of a healthier, earth-friendly lifestyle. Alternate methods of transportation were suggested including carpooling, bike riding and walking.

Solutions
A fully automated and paperless incentive process was created to reward associates for behavior changes during their daily commutes. Employees earned points to be redeemed for merchandise awards and personal travel. The system featured a website with a monthly online claiming process, individualized point bank accounts and an awards catalog/ordering portal. Communications included email notifications and updates.

Results
A total of 31% of eligible associates participated, opposed to the original estimates of 7% to 10%.
Parking space demand was reduced by 6%.
The annual $250,000 non-compliance fine was eliminated.
